‘Forks Chamber February program schedule announced

The Forks Chamber of Commerce meets at JT’s Sweet Stuffs at 80 N. Forks Ave. on Wednesday at noon. The public is welcome to attend the programs.

The Forks Chamber of Commerce meets Wednesday at noon at JT’s Sweet Stuffs on N. Forks Ave. The public is invited to attend the meetings. Lunch can be purchased at the meetings.

Feb. 8 - Harry Bell (Chair, Water and Shorelines Committee, Port Angeles Business Association) is speaking on Land Use and Wild Olympics Campaign. Bell will provide historical context to USDA Forest Service and Olympic National Park planning activities, provide an overview of the current Wild Olympics Campaign and several alternate proposals, and present the current Port Angeles Business Association proposal.

Feb. 15 - Twilight enthusiast and Forks community member Rosemary Colandrea will outline plans for Twilight-themed events to be held in Forks this year. She will share her vision of creating a permanent Twilight museum as movie sets and other memorabilia become available.

Feb. 22 - PENCOM Communications Manager Steve Romberg  and PENCOM Communications Supervisor, Karl Hatton will review what the Port Angeles-based PENCOM emergency dispatch system used on the  West End  does and how it operates. He will speak about a new initiative called “help 911 know your location” to emphasize the importance of letting the 911 operator know where you are calling from. PENCOM (Peninsula Communications) is the Communications Division of the Port Angeles Police Department and services the 911 needs for many communities including the West End.

Feb. 29 - Peninsula College West End Coordinator Debbie Scannell will discuss the academic programs available through the Forks Branch of Peninsula College, and give a picture of the student population it serves. She will be joined by students on various educational pathways who will share inspirational stories about the obstacles they have overcome along their way as they pursue an education.

Forks Congregational Church annual meeting

The Forks Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ is scheduled to hold its annual meeting on Sunday, Feb. 12 following the worship service. The church’s congregation will hold one of its famous potluck luncheons followed by its annual business meeting and elections of officers for the 2012 church year. The church council along with the congregation will be discussing plans for upcoming events. If you are a member of the church or a friend of the church and consider it your church home, you are urged to attend this meeting.

West End Youth League volleyball sign-up set for fifth and sixth graders

The West End Youth League volleyball sign-ups for fifth- and sixth-graders is scheduled for Monday,  Feb. 6 from 6-8 p.m. at Pacific Pizza Registration is $35 when combined with four hours of volunteer time, and includes knee pads for players. Valentine’s Day raffle

The Friends of Forks Animals are selling tickets for a Valentine’s Day raffle fund-raiser. A table is being set up at Forks Outfitters on Thursday, Feb. 2, Tuesday, Feb. 7 and Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. each day. 

Coast Guard’s Station Quillayute River holding annual memorial 

The 15th anniversary memorial service for the Coast Guard’s Motor Life Boat 44363 is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 12 at Station Quillayute River in LaPush. The vessel wrecked on the seaward side of James Island at LaPush on Feb. 12, 1997.

The Coast Guard crew attempted to rescue crew aboard a 31-foot sailboat that was in danger of hitting the rocks on James Island after dark while attempting to make it into the Quileute Marina at La Push during a heavy storm with high seas. The sailboat lost its mast and its engine became flooded.

The four-man crew aboard the 44-foot 44363 was rolled three times while attempting to reach the sailboat, and the superstructure of the motor life boat was ripped off and three of the four men aboard went into the ocean, all perished. The fourth crewmember remained tethered to boat and survived, landing on James Island. Perishing in the operation were Petty Officers Clinton Miniken, David Bosely and Matthew Schlimme.

A Coast Guard helicopter plucked the two sailors aboard the sailboat off their vessel just before it went aground on the rocks of James Island.

At 8 a.m. an open house is being held, and coffee and doughnuts will be served.

The station’s crew will muster at the 44363 memorial located at the front of the station at 9:45 a.m. The crew will present a wreath in front of the monument that is dedicated to the memory of the Motor Life Boat 44363 crew and their families. 

At noon the wreath and flowers will be taken offshore and a Coast Helicopter will do a fly-over and lay a wreath at sea. 

‘Women to Reckon With’ co-author to speak at Clallam County Historical Society

Glynda Peterson-Schaad, co-author of the Clallam County history-focused books “High Divide”and “Women to Reckon” is scheduled to speak at the Clallam County Historical Society’s History Tales lecture series on Sunday, February 5, at 2:30 p.m. in the Port Angeles City Council Chambers, 321 East 5th Street.

Using a digital presentation, the author will present the stories of several adventurous, 19th century women who played important roles in the settlement of Washington Territory, specifically the North Olympic Peninsula. In addition she will introduce several 20th century women who will be featured in the upcoming book “Women to Reckon With: Daughters of the Wilderness,” which she is co-writing with her brother Gary Peterson who lives in the upper Hoh River valley.

Peterson-Schaad was born and raised in Forks and is a fifth generation native of Washington Territory. She graduated from Seattle Pacific University and received a Masters in English from the University of Washington. She has been an adjunct instructor at Peninsula College for the last 17 years, teaching both in Port Angeles and Forks. She also worked in the Clallam County Juvenile Justice system for 17 years.

Relay for Life 2012 kickoff set for mid-February

A community kickoff is in the works for the American Cancer Society 2012 Forks Relay for Life event set for August 3-4.

The kickoff is being held at the Forks Elks Lodge on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A day of bingo, food and relay planning is on the agenda.

The 2012 Relay For Life in Forks is to run from Friday, Aug. 3 beginning at 3 p.m. into Saturday, Aug. 4 at 3 p.m. at Spartan Stadium on the Forks High School campus. The Survivor Lap is made at 6:00 p.m., the lighting of luminaria at 10 p.m. and a closing ceremony is held at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Team Development Chair Joe Korst from Forks Outfitters addressed the Forks Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Jan. 4 and announced the mid-February event. Some $29,000 was raised at the Forks Relay for Life in 2011, and a goal of $32,000 for 2012 has been set, event organizers said at the Chamber meeting. 

WEBPA meetings

The West End Business and Professional Association meets Wednesday morning at the state Department of Natural Resources Conference room at 7:30 a.m.  

The Feb. 1 meeting is a business meeting.

 Lake Ozette Steering Committee to meet

The Lake Ozette Steering Committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday, Feb. 2, 10:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., at the Sekiu Community Center. 

Citizens are invited to attend the Steering Committee’s discussion about Lake Ozette Sockeye Salmon recovery updates, public outreach, and project implementation. Agenda topics will include planning efforts for Recovery Plan implementation; public outreach and education; and future Steering Committee activities.

 Over the last five years, the Committee has helped develop the Lake Ozette Sockeye Salmon Recovery Plan and is now providing input for its implementation.  The Steering Committee’s open membership includes landowners, interested citizens, timber companies, as well as representatives from local, state, federal, and tribal governments.

Kalaloch Beach planned to reopen to clamming in April

The state Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) is planning a razor clam dig at Kalaloch Beach April 7-9.

Kalaloch Beach has been closed during the current razor clam digging season due to a low abundance of razor clams. The National Park Service manages the beach in cooperation with WDFW.

State shellfish managers have announced tentative dates at other ocean beaches for evening razor clam digs during the next two months.

In announcing the first digs of 2012, WDFW officials are emphasizing that final approval of all openings will depend on results of marine toxin tests that show the clams are safe to eat.

The first dig is scheduled Jan. 20-21 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks on evening tides. The second is planned during President’s Day weekend, Feb. 18-19, at Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks.

No digging will be allowed at any beach before noon.

Additional digs through spring will be announced once a catch assessment is completed for the season through February, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager.

The dates, beaches and evening low tides for the digs scheduled in January and February are:

• Jan. 20, Friday, 4:28 p.m. (-0.5 feet); Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks;

• Jan. 21, Saturday, 5:17 p.m. (-0.8 feet); Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks;

• Feb.18, Saturday, 4:13 p.m. (0.0 feet) Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks;

• Feb.19, Sunday, 5 p.m. (-0.2 feet) Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks. 

Food worker classes offered in Forks

The 2012 Clallam County Food Worker Classes are being offered in Forks this year at the Forks Library.

Taking the class is a prerequisite for taking a food workers test. Those who pass the test receive a food workers card necessary for working in a restaurant and other food handling jobs.

The Clallam.net website shows that the classes “are for anyone who works with food in a restaurant or other facility. This includes cooks, servers, dishwashers, espresso stand workers, caregivers, grocery stockers and more. If you have any question about whether you need a card, please contact the Environmental Health Division.”

The class test may be taken online using a computer if the user has a printer and a credit card or debit card at www.clallam.net.

Classes in Forks are being held the second Wednesday of each month through August, and run from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 1:30 p.m. The fee is $10.00 and payable at registration. Class size is limited to 20 students.

The next class is set for Wednesday, Feb. 8. A class on March 14 follows.

YA Comic Book Club starting up

Starting on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 3:30 p.m. and meeting the first and third Tuesdays of the month until Tuesday, May 29, young adults are encouraged to join the YA Comic Book Club at the Forks Branch of the North Olympic Library System.

 Among the first activities, club members will plan, design, and develop their own comic strips, cartoon characters, and graphic novels. Members will  use new types of graphic design materials to learn the art, design techniques, and writing skills needed to creating a comic book or graphic novel.

The first meeting, set for Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 3:30 p.m. will be a welcome event.  Information about the comic book club will be provided, along with the opportunity to create a three-panel comic.  

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the club begins preliminary character drawings and story line plans.  

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, members are to finish story development and begin sample layouts.

Caring Place dinner

The annual Caring Place Dinner and Auction is set for Friday, Feb. 10 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Forks Assembly of God. Donations are being sought from individuals, organizations and businesses.

The Caring Place has for 25 years provided parenting and family education through “Earn while you learn” programs. through providing car seats, diapers, infant clothing, vitamins, food, free pregnancy  tests, peer counseling, childbirth education and other types of advocacy support.

QVSD seeks memorabilia

In preparation for the grand opening of Forks High School, the Quillayute Valley School District will be displaying Forks High School and Spartan artifacts and memorabilia in the new Heritage Hall. 
We are looking for items such as, old photographs, academic work, textbooks, class information, uniforms, and so forth that will connect our current students to the rich history of our past.  If you have items you would be willing to loan or would be willing to give to the school for display, please contact the District Office at 374-6262.
Orders are being taken now for a fund-raising sale of bricks.  The installation will occur in the spring of 2012. The bricks are priced at $40 each.  If you wish to purchase a brick, fill out an order form and return it with cash or a check made payable to “Forks Soroptomists” and dropped off at the Quillayute Valley School District Office, 411 South Spartan Avenue, Forks, WA  98331 or mailed to Forks Soroptimists at PO Box 329, Forks, WA  98331. 

Firewood for sale to aid Senior Safe Night program
The Senior Parents of the Forks High School Class of 2012 are selling firewood as a fund-raiser. Anyone interested in purchasing a cord or more of firewood, delivered to their specific location, should call 374-4263, or contact Casey Ray at (360) 461-0266 or Tina Ray at 640-2710.
The option of pre-ordering to be delivered at a later date is available.
All funds raised will go directly to supporting the Senior Safe Night held following high school graduation each year. Senior Safe Night provides graduating students a safe drug- and alcohol-free opportunity to celebrate their success in completing this life milestone.

Immunization schedule
The Clallam County Health  and Human Services Forks Office at 140 C Street has announed its 2012 immunization schedule. The first two are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 17 and Thursday, Feb. 21 (17 de Enero  and 21 de Febrero).

Immunization clinics are held on the third Thursday of each month. All clinics are from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. No appointment is needed and medical coupons are welcome.
