Fourth of July events to be spread over long weekend

The Forks Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration Committee has released a schedule of events for the upcoming holiday weekend.

A new touch for the annual event which has roots in Forks’ pioneer days of the late 1800s and early 1900s is a Forks Fourth of July Celebration Facebook page. The page features updates on the events scheduled, plus recent and vintage photos, and comments and memories of past Fourth of July weekends in Forks.

The celebration kicks off quietly on Friday, July 1 with the beginning of the window dressing contest voting.

On Saturday, July 2 the popular annual horseshoe tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. and a special fun run begins also at 9 a.m. Kiddies Fun Day action runs from noon to 2 p.m., with the Frog Jump at 4 p.m. at Tillicum Park.

Downtown Forks shopping and fun at the Moonlight Madness sale runs from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday.
On Sunday, July 3 the Sacks Bean Bag Tournament begins at 10 a.m. at Tillicum Park, with an archery tournament at the Old Mill Archery Range running from 2 to 3 p.m.

Monday, July 4 is the big day of the weekend, with the Fourth of July Parade rolling out at noon. Due to the closure of Russell Road due to culvert problems, the parade floats will be setting up and judged in the Forks Transit Center Parking lot. This will allow through-traffic a way to get around the section of Forks Avenue being closed for the parade.

Breakfast will be served at the Forks Elks Club beginning at 8 a.m., and the Forks Lions Club will serve its traditional salmon plate lunch at the Tillicum Park Pavilion beginning at 1 p.m.

The Fourth of July Demolition Derby begins to roar at 3 p.m. at the Tillicum Park Arena, with gates opening at 2 p.m. soon after the Fourth of July Parade.

The fireworks show is to be lit off at Tillicum Park at dusk.

Financial support for the parade and fireworks show and other costs is raised through sales of Forks Old Fashioned Fourth of July buttons, and tickets to the demo derby.

Buttons and tickets will be on sale at the West End Youth League fireworks stand that is set up at the corner of South Forks Avenue and Bogachiel Way, and at the adjacent Fourth of July information booth.
