This was the fourth straight year the Forks Spartan Mathletes ventured to Silverdale for the Region 10 Math Competition. And this was the fourth straight year the Spartans dominated the competition and brought back a Regional 10 - Division 2 Championship. This was the best outting for the Spartans so far with the team only missing out on 2- 3rd place awards. The Spartans took 8 of the 10 possible awards.
The competition started with the teams working on a one-hour Team Problem. They were given a scenario and had to do their best solving the problem. Forks' team of Stevi Martinez-Jewett and Rebekah Johansen finished in 1st place, followed by a 2nd place finish by fellow Spartans Nick Gilmore and Nate Pennington.
After a short break the student teams and individuals worked on two 30-minute periods of 15 questions known as the Topical Problems. Forks Swept the teams competition with a first place finish by Stevi Martinez -Jewett and Rebekah Johansen, a second place finish by Nick Gilmore and Nate Pennington, and a third place finsh by Kelsie Johnson and Erin Weeks.
Then the awards were given for the Individual Topical contestants and Alissa Shaw got 1st , while Brooke Peterson got 2nd.
First place finishers automatically qualify for the State competion scheduled in Yakima, April 13.
So far, the students going to state are Rachel Harner, Alissa Shaw, Sehar Bokhari, Stevi Martinez-Jewett, Rebekah Johansen, and Brooke Peterson. Two more possible going to State could be Nick Gilmore and Nate Pennington.
The times have changed at Forks from four years ago when Forks High School sent 5 males and no females to state and now it is 6 females and maybe just two males.
