Clallam Bay Ocean Bowl Team back from NOSB

On April 20-23, the Clallam Bay Ocean Bowl team volunteered at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl Competition (NOSB) held at Oregon State University where they had the incredible opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the process of the fierce competition.

The team toured the campus and was permitted to use the OSU recreational facilities to go swimming; they also visited one of the research facilities where there was a very interesting Wave Tank setup so that students could perform experiments involving wave studies in a controlled area, they also were offered an opportunity to tour an extensive ichthyology collection. Later, they attended a career exploration event where they were able to meet with many fascinating and successful individuals from many different scientific fields.

They helped set up for the competition and attended the opening ceremony where they gained a lot of insight and many life lessons from colorful keynote speakers. The girls worked as “Runners” where they ran the entire day rushing written team answers to in-depth ocean-based questions down to the science judges for scoring. On the last day, when they were no longer needed as runners, they took the opportunity to watch the final battle for first place. It was a very educational experience.

Beverly Mowrer and the girls would like to thank everyone who helped make this trip possible by supporting the Easter Craft and Bake Sales on April 15 and extend their gratitude to the Fork Forum and Hess Mart for allowing them to set up tables at their businesses.
