Members of the newly-formed West End Track & Trail, all terrain vehicle (ATV) and motorcycle club recently met with U.S. Forest Service  staff to review a proposed plan to designate an ATV trail system in the Bonidu Creek area of the North Fork Calawah Watershed.

The meeting was held on Tuesday evening, Nov. 8 at the state Department of Natural Resources conference room on Tillicum Lane.

At the meeting Forest Service  staff fielded questions from ATV enthusiasts. They also encouraged attendees to  review maps of the proposed trails, and to discuss the trails.

Old forest roads would be converted to trails and existing user-built routes will make up over 23 miles of legal ATV trailways if the plan moves forward.

The proposal is one of the first steps in a lengthy process of permitting and determinations related to many public land use issues, Forks Councilman John Hillcar reported to the Forks Forum.

Timelines of up to two years before construction could begin were mentioned, Hillcar said. “Nevertheless, club members seemed mostly pleased with the preliminary plan calling it ‘a good start,’ and vowed to actively cooperate with Forest Service to see the plan become reality.”
