BMCS Michael K. Carola

Station Quillayute River

Senior Chief Carola assumed the roles and responsibilities as Officer in Charge of Station Quillayute River in May of 2018. Hailing from Oakland, Maryland Senior Chief Carola enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1998, beginning his career at Station Oregon Inlet, NC. Running SAR on the 47201 the path was evident, striking Boatswain Mate and serving in the surf community was the call.

As luck may have it, six surf stations in a row, and over twenty years in District 13, Senior Chief Carola arrived at Yaquina Bay, OR in 2001 to obtain all of his boat driving qualifications, including Surfman; #377 in April of 2006.

From Quillayute River WA to Tillamook Bay OR, to Umpqua River, OR as the Executive Petty Officer, and back to Quillayute River, WA with the privilege to be an Officer in Charge.

Senior Chief Carola’s career in the surf included the honor of serving the last three Ancient Keepers as the Boat Forces Advisory Council (BF AC) member for the surf community and has served as the District 13 BFAC member for the surf community.

Senior Chief Carola is married to former Kari Maple of Post Falls, ID who is a Coast Guard veteran that served ashore and afloat including PATFORSWA and is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine candidate, class of 2022 at Oregon State University.

Military decorations include the Coast Guard Medal and Coast Guard Commendation Medal. Non-Military decorations include the Association for Rescues at Sea (AFRAS) Gold Medal and Non-Commissioned Officers Association (NCOA) Military Vanguard Award.

BMCS Shane R. Abold

Executive Petty Officer,

Station Bodega Bay

Senior Chief Abold assumed the roles and responsibilities as the Executive Petty Officer of Station Bodega Bay in June of 2019. Hailing from Willows, California Senior Chief Abold enlisted in the Coast Guard in 2004, beginning his career on the CGC Alex Haley homeported in Kodiak, AK.

After graduating from BM A-School in January 2006, Senior Chief Abold entered the Prospective Surfman program and was assigned to Station Tillamook Bay, OR where he certified as Surfman #437 in February 2010.

Senior Chief Abold’s assignments also include Station Cape Disappointment, WA, and Surfman Trainer at Station Umpqua River, OR where he earned OIC Ashore certification in the spring of 2016.

Senior Chief Abold graduated from the 41st Fire Academy at Butte College in Oroville, California. While assigned to Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment he earned the Commander Ray Evans Outstanding Coxswain Award in 2014. His military decorations include three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, three Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and several other personal and unit awards.

Senior Chief Abold is married to the former Erin Egeline of Yreka, CA, and has two children, Trenton, age 13, and Taylor, age 11.
