This week, 25 years ago, a domestic violence call, at a local mobile home park residence, had led to the discovery of 37 marijuana plants in a back bedroom. It was sad news that 94-year-old Archer Kingsley Smith had died. He was the son of pioneer Mina Smith and was born in 1906. He had lived almost his entire life on the Quillayute Prairie. Archer was a storyteller, author, historian, farmer and horticulturist. A self taught musician he could play violin, guitar, harmonica, accordion and piano. A week of Hickory Shirt – Heritage Days was planned.
This week in 1975 Forks resident Sue Yocum had soloed piloting her Cessna 172 on a short trip to PA and back to the Forks Airport. Russ Thomas and Joe Burke were working to get out a questionaire about a new proposed Community Center (photo). Spartan football captains for the upcoming North Beach game were Rick Hurn and Jeff Hilt; also appearing in the photo was Don Perry (photo). Helen King and Mei Hsu had opened Forks Boot and Shoe on Sol Duc Way. Mei had come from Taiwan to Forks to join her husband Rich who studied Forestry at the UW and was now employed at the DNR (photo).
In 1968 it was reported that fast work by the Forks Volunteer Fire Department had prevented the total loss of a cabin owned by Glen Demorest (photo). The Rainbow Girls had held installation and Peggy Rhyne was installed as the new Worthy Advisor.
This week in 1953, 35 local children ages six and under were entered in a Baby Contest. Their photos were on display at Olympic Pharmacy . The contest was sponsored by American Legion Post 106. The Federal Civilian Defense Administration had approved the application for the Forks Fire Department to purchase a new fire truck. The Forks Department and the FCDA would split the $14,000 cost. Fundraisers were being held to help buy the needed fire hose.
