A Look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2001, Forks had surpassed its $50,000 United Way goal under the chairmanship of Anita Ferris (photo). A KING5 helicopter, in town to do a story about a little girl being left on the school bus, had helped spot the 81-year-old missing hiker near the Queets area, which led to his successful recovery. It was reported that FHS grad Kasey Ulin had made the honor roll at Yakima Valley Community College.

Fifty years ago this week, it was exciting news that super soccer star Pepe Fernandez, of the Seattle Sounders, was coming to La Push. He was to be joined by several other soccer players and would offer a soccer clinic for area kids. He was also bringing his guitar. Spartan wrestling cheerleaders were featured in a photo …Donna, Gina, Barbara, and Tami were ready to cheer on the team (photo). The merger of Forks State Bank into Seafirst Bank of Seattle was the topic of discussion at the Forks Chamber meeting.

This week in 1969, the headline read …Snow + Rain = Tragedy as three weeks of snow and two hours of rain had collapsed a Forks landmark. The American Legion Hall was toast. The building was built in 1935 and was a much-used gathering spot for the community (photo). School safety patrol members, Nancy, Don, Kim, Pat, and Terry, were ready to help students and others cross the streets near the school (photo).

This week in 1954, pioneer Harvey Smith had passed. He had lived in the area for 77 years. He was born in South Dakota and arrived at La Push with his family at the age of two.

This week in 1940, Anderson & Stevens were planning an open house for their new garage and service station; it was reported they were also planning to sell Plymouth and Chrysler cars. Almost 400 people attended Charlotte “Grandma” Klahn’s 100th birthday party at the IOOF Hall.
