Pruning Blueberries for Productivity

Now is the time to prune your blueberries. An annual pruning regimen is needed to encourage strong new growth and promote good berry production. Commonly used pruning techniques, however, can be counterproductive with blueberries.

On Saturday, Feb. 5, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Clallam County Master Gardeners Jeanette Stehr-Green and Audreen Williams will teach home gardeners how to prune their blueberry bushes for productivity. They will describe the typical growth pattern of blueberries and outline a systematic approach to pruning. They will talk about how to prune newly planted and transplanted blueberries, stressed bushes, and neglected plants. Stehr-Green and Williams will demonstrate proper blueberry pruning techniques using videos recorded at the Fifth Street Community Garden in Port Angeles.

Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003 and was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year. She completed Oregon State University’s Online Blueberry School in 2019. Williams joined Master Gardeners in 2012 and was the 2014 and 2019 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year. Both Stehr-Green and Williams have attained Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners and have many years of experience growing berries of all types.

This presentation is part of Clallam County Master Gardener’s “Digging Deeper” educational series. Digging Deeper presentations are held on the first and third Saturdays of most months and cover basic gardening topics relevant to many home gardeners. Sessions are scheduled for 90-minutes to allow for demonstrations (or videos) and questions from viewers.

Upcoming Digging Deeper presentations will be held live via ZOOM at https://wsu.zoom.us/j/92007991742?pwd=OWxtbmNBditKd3ordjA2WEFyME9PUT09. You can link to these presentations through the Clallam County Master Gardener Calendar at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/.

NOLS hosts Olympic National Park’s

Perspectives Winter Speaker Series

Olympic National Park’s Perspectives Winter Speaker Series is hosted by the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) via Zoom for the 2022 season. The free talks will be offered at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month from January through April. Registration, available at www.nols.org, is required to attend the Zoom meeting. Participation at each program is limited to the first 100 registered attendees. Programs will be simultaneously streamed via the NOLS Facebook page for additional participants.

This series is sponsored by Olympic National Park, the Friends of Olympic National Park, and the North Olympic Library System. This season’s topics are:

February 8

Revisiting Stratigraphy of the Eocene to Miocene Sedimentary Rocks on the Olympic Peninsula

Erin Donaghy, PhD Student, Purdue University

This research aims to better understand sedimentary basin formation following accretion of a large oceanic plateau (Siletzia) to the Pacific Northwest approximately 50 million years ago. We document the sedimentary basin response to this collision by characterizing changing depositional environments and sediment routing pathways in basin deposits to understand how tectonic plate configurations changed during establishment of the modern Cascadia magmatic arc.

March 8

Forest Restoration on Exposed Sediments Along the Elwha River

James Kardouni and Jenise M. Bauman, Western Washington University

Riverbank lupine is a pioneering species that assimilates nitrogen through nitrogen-fixing bacteria in a form that is readily available to plants. The purpose of this study was to investigate lupine’s influence on conifer establishment in newly exposed soils that resulted from the removal of the dams on the Elwha River.

April 12

KIamath River Restoration

Josh Chenoweth, Klamath River Restoration

Josh Chenoweth managed the revegetation effort after dam removal on the Elwha River. He’s since moved to take on a similar role during Klamath River Restoration in Southern Oregon/Northern California. Learn about how lessons learned from Elwha revegetation and restoration are informing Klamath restoration.
