Celebrating 40 years of history

Our Story – A message from South North Garden

South North Garden first opened its doors on Father’s Day in 1986. It was founded by Uncle Sam, then passed down to Aunt Lilly Lau, and later to Brother Ming Mac.

From the very beginning, the restaurant was built on the values of family, hard work, and sharing traditional flavors with the community.

For nearly four decades, South North Garden has been a beloved local spot. For the past two decades, Ming Mac has been at the heart of the kitchen, dedicating his life to cooking and serving others.

In September 2023, Ming was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. Despite undergoing rigorous treatment and battling fatigue, he continued to cook and manage the restaurant with unwavering dedication. However, as the toll of treatment has grown, it has become clear that this demanding lifestyle is no longer sustainable.

Ming will now return home to Federal Way, Washington, where he’ll be supported by his wife and two sons as they help care for him. As he continues his fight, he hopes to finally enjoy time outside of the restaurant — resting, spending meaningful moments with family, and exploring the world beyond the kitchen.

We are deeply grateful to the loyal customers and community who have supported South North Garden over the years. This restaurant has always been more than a business — it has been a family.
