One-car accident sends man to hospital

Authorities searching for driver

FORKS — On Sunday, May 24, at approximately 1:45 a.m., deputies from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Forks Detachment were dispatched to the report of a vehicle collision near milepost 5 on Sitkum Solduc Road, commonly known as the A Road.

The collision was reported as a one-car injury accident. Deputies from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and arrived a short time later.

Prior to arrival, deputies were notified by Pencom that there was a person trapped inside of the vehicle.

Forks ambulance and additional first responders from the Forks Fire Department also were dispatched to the accident.

Upon arrival, deputies located a vehicle with New Mexico plates that had driven off of the roadway and down a steep embankment.

The vehicle had collided with a tree and came to rest above the Sol Duc River.

The man trapped in the vehicle was 25-year-old Gage E. Olivas from New Mexico.

The vehicle was secured in place by Forks Fire Personnel.

The patient was extracted from the vehicle and was transported to Forks Community Hospital.

The patient was later flown to Harborview Medical Center due to a serious arm injury he received during the collision. He is in stable condition.

It is believed that alcohol may have played a contributing factor in the cause of the vehicle collision.

The driver of the vehicle has not yet been positively identified and was reported to have fled the scene prior to the arrival of deputies.

Deputies continue to investigate the cause of the crash and are diligently working to identify the driver of the vehicle.
