On March 15, students in grade 5-8 at Clallam Bay School traveled to John and Karolyn Burdick’s property on the Pysht River to plant trees as part of a “Plant for the Planet” effort. This global organization involves young people in combating global warming through planting millions of trees, which serve as carbon dioxide sinks and help reduce pollution.

The 29 students from John Wonderly’s and Kevin Eyer’s classes planted 60 trees on the Burdicks’ land, which is part of a North Olympic Land Trust conservation easement. After lunch, the students hiked on some of the trails, which are open to the public.

Planting trees was the second part of the “Plant for the Planet” program. On March 11, Michael Foster, assisted by Abbey Fierro-Burdick as “Ambassador” for the program, had presented slides and videos describing the effects of climate change and the origin of the children’s initiative to fight global warming.
