The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced Wednesday that carriers that to stem its continuing financial loses the  post office will no longer deliver mail to homes and businesses on Saturday. However, packages can still be picked up at post offices on Saturday, and mail would still be delivered to post office boxes on Saturday.

The change is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Aug. 5. It is estimated to save the USPS $2 billion a year. While posting of packages has increased over 10 percent in recent years, the use of email for letters, bills and other communications has cut into the use of paper communications commonly sent by mail.

The Forks Post Office is open from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The USPS cited a survey that showed seven out of ten of its customers saw dropping Saturday delivery as a fair way to help cut costs. 

The national letter carriers union is opposing the reduction in service. 

The USPS has also discussed closing smaller rural post offices, consolidating customer services at larger locations. Changes to postal employee pension and health care plans is another cost-saving issue in discussion.
