In the fall of 1945 the Forks Spartans were perfect. They had won every game that season and on Thanksgiving Day they met North Kitsap in a battle to decide which would be the unofficial Tri-County champs.

The Forks Spartans football team ended a perfect season on Thanksgiving Day in the first annual “Rain Bowl” game when they defeated the North Kitsap High School Vikings of Poulsbo 27-7 before a large crowd.

This was the 11th straight victory for Coach Dalberg’s Spartans and by virtue of the win Forks became the unofficial North Olympic Peninsula Champions. North Kitsap won the tri-county league title.

The game began with Forks receiving the kickoff on its own 20. In two plays they had reached the 50-yard line and the next play Glen Christian went all the way to score standing up. The try-for point was missed and Forks led 6-0.

Forks came within seven yards of another score late in the second quarter when Jacobson threw a 30-yard pass to Kaemmle who caught it on the Poulsbo 7-yard line. On the next play Forks was penalized 15 yards for holding and a fumbled lateral was recovered by Poulsbo on the 35-yard line to end the scoring threat.

In the third quarter after an exchange of punts Forks took the ball on its own 40-yard line and made four first downs by running plays and forward passes, reaching the Poulsbo 8-yard line. On the next play Terry Hinchen smashed his way to pay dirt through the center line.

Christian scored the extra point and Forks led 13-0.

Shortly after the fourth quarter opened Kaemmle intercepted a pass on the Poulsbo 40. Christian started from there on the next play on a beautiful broken field run. He was hit four times but got away to score standing up. Duncan converted and and the score was 20-7.

The only Poulsbo score came a few minutes later when fullback Baker intercepted a Forks pass and ran 65 yards to score. Dummond converted and the score was 20-7.

Christian scored again for Forks a few minutes later on a 32-yard gallop and also scored the extra point, which put Forks in the lead 27-7. The game ended after a few more plays.

“The difference between the two teams was Glen Christian of the Forks Spartans,” Coach Dalberg stated. “Poulsbo has a great player in fullback Baker. He was a hard man to stop,”  Dalberg said.

Both teams were given a turkey dinner banquet after the game and a check from the Port Angeles Elks Lodge was presented to the school in the amount of $508.40 to wipe out a deficit in the Forks High School athletic fund.

The starting lineup for the Spartans were Tom Stevens, Duane Vedder, Ed Duncan, Harold Kennedy, Roland Undi, Jack Wilson, Carl Kaemmle, Jim Jacobson, Terry Hinchen, Glen Christian and Phil Palmer.

Wayne Cline, Frank Sullivan and Tom Mansfield were three of the officials.
