Forks City Council Elections

Dear Editor,

The filing period to run for office in the November election of three Forks City Council members is May 13-17, so I am hoping some civic-minded citizens will decide to take part. I will be stepping aside this year to provide someone else an opportunity to serve in my place.

The qualifications are simple: you must live within the Forks city limits and have an interest in the well being of our town. Meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. and I encourage any potential candidates to attend the one on May 13, to get a feeling about what is required.

The main responsibilities, shared with 4 other council members, would include (1) amending and adding city ordinances (laws) and (2) reviewing, passing and monitoring the annual budget. Council members are not responsible for running the daily operations of the City. That role belongs to the mayor and staff.

As a side note, the Forks High School class of 1973 has so far provided 3 members to the council, starting with Jerry Beebe, then Kevin Hinchen and myself. Is there another class up to the challenge?

During the week of May 13-17, you can file online or in person at the county courthouse in Port Angeles. There is no filing fee for these unpaid positions.

Any interested individuals may feel free to contact me for more information at billb@forkswashington.org.
