West Enders plant sale blooms

By Donna Barr

Saturday, May 4, proved a perfect day for the Senior West Enders to hold their plant sale in the Sekiu Community Center.

Summer-like weather made the event even more pleasant, allowing the double doors of the upstairs room to be propped open, bringing in a soft warm breeze from the dark, wind-whipped waters of Clallam Bay.

The room was crowded with customers looking for the beauty of spring and the traditional good eats served at West End events. Special guests included Angel Crest Nursery and the Bogachiel Garden Club.

The plants featured at the sale were purchased from Angel Crest, outside of Port Angeles.

Forks’s Bogachiel Garden Club — often noted by the Forks Forum — offered a table covered with well-used garden, bird and building books donated by their members, for sale for as little as 25 cents apiece.

“It’s a real deal,” said the club’s Barbara Scott. She was assisted in putting the pieces together by Sue Alexander.

The show included plants, from small potted starters to baskets of multi-colored flowers, to small exotic trees. Also featured were garden decor, garden art, gardening books and artwork by the Messy Palettes art club. Especially attractive was the display of sparkling garden lances, fashioned from second-hand glass dishes and vases glued together in towers on stakes, glittering in the brilliant spring sun.

The delicate aroma of lavender wafted from the table display of Forks’s Bear Creek Blooms, the only local lavender farm.

A raffle for the West Enders featured plants and a hanging basket from Angel Crest Nursery. Jerry White donated a cedar planter bench (call 963-2668 for more on White’s benches).

The Clallam Bay/Sekiu Lion’s Club’s Evelyn Person sold white cane badges at the door, as part of the annual White Cane charitable eye-care event, that takes place the first week of May. Donations go to the Lions Eye Bank Donor Program.

Refreshments included a tasty $5 lunch, with a choice of a chicken salad croissant sandwich or pulled pork on a bun, with fresh fruit or coleslaw. Baked goods, from chocolate layer cake to dainty miniature pink-frosted cupcakes, were donated by Dixie Simpson, Judy Fischel, Patty White, Dorie Wall and Sandy Granum.
