Big Changes are coming to Relay For Life this weekend
Published 5:32 pm Thursday, August 4, 2016
Relay For Life is back with Super Heroes invading Forks to smash CANCER. The Cancer Fighting begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 5 with a Super Hero costume parade. Don your cape, mask, and Super Hero costume and join the teams walking the bus loop between the intermediate and high school on Camas Ave. This is a new location due to the construction underway at track/field. Parking is available in front of the high school on Spartan Ave. Enter event by the bioburner.
Live entertainment also begins at 5 p.m. with Crescent Blue performing and continues with local talents, Kaci Price and “Maybe Next Tuesday”. New to Relay this year will be a Super Hero Scavenger Hunt from 7-8pm. Gather your friends, family, and coworkers to form a team to solve the clues, search the track, and take “selfies”. Entry fee of $5/person. Prizes awarded to the winners. Also new, a bouncy house run by Forks Young Life. Check the schedule for times for all the other family fun and games.
A celebration of Super Heroes, aka: Survivors and their Caregivers, will take place during opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. and a survivor lap. At 6:30, sponsors will be recognized. Forks continues to set the peninsula record with 28. Dinner is served and teams will be cooking up succulent specialties including carne asada, pulled pork sandwiches, baked potatoes and all the trimmings, and desserts.
As darkness falls, hope lights the way with a luminaria ceremony and a time to remember those lost to cancer. Join us 10 p.m. to watch the lighting of about 500 luminaria bags with candles. Each represents someone who has battled cancer– some honor the survivors, while others are in loving memory of those we have lost.
Because cancer doesn’t sleep, neither will we. Teams will continue to walk the loop all night guided by the light of the luminarias. Fun-filled activities will also continue. Join us for Zumba at 11pm, Karaoke at midnight, and Yoga at daylight. Breakfast begins at 7 a.m. with St. Anne’s serving gravy and biscuits. The highlight of the morning is “The Road to Recovery” Super Hero Vehicle Race at 8:30. Teams are constructing cardboard box vehicles to race and perform “Super Hero Feats”.
The final lap around the track will take place at 9:30 a.m., followed by a “Fight Back!” closing ceremony. This year’s goal is to raise $32,000 for the American Cancer Society. The dollars raised are critical in supporting the ACS’s mission to save more lives from cancer. We can’t do it without you!
