This week in 2000 a meeting had been set to discuss the closing of Kalaloch beaches to clam digging. A meeting was set to discuss bank protection ideas for the Hoh River Road. Engineered log jams were to be discussed. New Quileute ball fields had been completed at La Push. The $30,000 4th stage of the Quileute Marina project was underway with paving of the parking lot (photo). The Feast of Forks and Fly In had been fun (photo). The rainfall total for the year was reported at 60.60 inches.
Fifty years ago this week the city council was discussing mandatory garbage pick-up; council member Chilson was not in favor of mandatory anything. West E St. was being paved, from Ulins to the Catholic Church. The Forks Forum office had moved to the corner of 1st Ave.(now Spartan) and Division St. The Forks Bible Church was building a new Church next to the old one.
This week in 1968 Darigold (Angeles Cooperative Creamery) had built a new plant at the corner of 1st (now Spartan) and Calawah Way. The old creamery building was to be torn down (photo). It was reported that Richard Haberman and family had, had a memorable camping trip on the Goodman when two pilots had parachuted out of a Grumman A-6 Intruder. Haberman was able to rescue one of the crewmen and get help to search for the other. Unfortunately one crew member had died. A Los Angeles, CA family who had been the Tourists of the Day for the 4th had sent a letter thanking the Chamber and the community for the great time they had. “It was the most lovely and memorable 4th ever.”
This week in 1953 a rare photo appeared on the front page. Five miles up the Hoh Road, county maintenance man Gene Fraker was approached by a two-year-old buck and a photographer for a machinery company just happened to get it on film (photo). Harry Marshal son of Quillayute Prairie pioneers had passed at the young age of 44 years old. He was a log truck driver for Frank Henry at the time of his death. Rayonier was suing the USFS over damage to their property from the Forks Fire. The era of local Forks telephone operators was over, calls would now be handled by the Bell System operators in Port Angeles.
