This week in 2000, and even though it was a long way from done, the Peninsula College Forks Extension site held an open house at its new downtown location. Hannah Singhose was being honored with a picnic recognizing her 41 years in nursing. A rep from the FAA had visited the Quillayute Airport.
Fifty years ago this week Spartan football captains Mike Musick and Mike Rickman were featured in a photo. The Spartans had defeated Sequim 7-0 with a Don Perry touchdown and Mitch Lamb with the extra point kick. Casey Horton’s race car was featured in a front page photo taken in front of Peninsula Logger’s Supply (photo). John Leppell had donated to the Student Sports Program (photo). In classified ads 5 acres in Beaver was listed at $9,750. Police Chief Bryson and Mayor DePew had dumped out all the confiscated liquor from the past year (photo).
This week in 1968 it was reported the state would offer 67.8 mbf of timber for sale, in 10 counties, in October. School principals Windsor and Travers reported school enrollment at 1,190. A 4th kindergarten class had to be added; a double shift program had also been added.The Forks Bible Church was adding on a large addition.
This week in 1953, Jim and Andrea Lucken playing violin and accordion had performed for the Beaver PTA, their mother Pearl accompanied on piano. The Coast Guard at La Push had rescued a commercial fisherman whose boat sank 8 miles west of James Island. He had put important items into a pressure cooker, tightened the lid, tied it to himself and wearing two life jackets jumped overboard. He was in the water 45 minutes before being rescued. Larry Palmer had returned to his Army Camp after visiting with his mother and sister in Forks. The city of Forks was seeking bids for wells to be drilled to replace the current water system which was a dam on Elk Creek, which would be abandoned, providing much cleaner water to the community. They were also seeking bids for a steel reservoir and laying three miles of pipe.
