Poetry open mic for Indigenous Peoples Day with c’ic’áyx̣ʷmu Rachel Sullivan-Owens

The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) and Peninsula College are co-hosting the fifth annual Indigenous Peoples Day Poetry Reading, an open mic event with featured poet c’ic’áyx̣ʷmu Rachel Sullivan-Owens. Native/Indigenous poets of all experience levels are invited to share their work at ʔaʔkʷustəŋáw̕txʷ House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse on the Port Angeles campus on Monday, Oct. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The event will also be live-streamed on Zoom for those who wish to listen remotely. Please note that only Native poets who attend in-person will be able to share during the open mic. A sign-up sheet will be available at the entrance. Visit NOLS.org/IPD or contact the library for Zoom information. This event is free and open to the public.

About the Featured Poet

c’ic’áyx̣ʷmu Rachel Sullivan-Owens is a local Indigenous poet and author from the nəxʷsƛ̕áy̕əm̕ people, enrolled with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe in Sequim. Most recently published in The Yellow Medicine Review, she dedicates herself to her family, her culture, her community and her ongoing education. Rachel’s work focuses on many themes, including the 2 Spirit-LGBTQI+ experience, the reclamation of Klallam Language, and the nuances of life as a mother, wife, artist and teacher.

About the Holiday

Indigenous Peoples Day is a national holiday that honors the Indigenous peoples of what is now known as North America. First celebrated in 1992 on the second Monday in October, Indigenous Peoples Day was officially proclaimed a national holiday in 2021.
