This week in 2000, Spartan volleyball was on a winning streak. The third annual WOCA Haunted House was taking shape at the Rainforest Arts Center (Old IOOF Hall). To advertise the event a giant spider had been placed on the side of the building (photo). The Upper Hoh Road had been closed due to road erosion. The In Place Restaurant was getting a new roof.
Fifty years ago this week, the Upper Hoh Road had washed out, and Highway 101 south, near the Hoh River, was also in jeopardy of being lost after heavy rains. Trucks hauled large rock around the clock and quickly stabilized the highway. The FHS varsity cheerleaders were featured in a photo (photo). Scott Birdwell and Glen Price were Spartan football captains (photo). A going-away party was planned at the Assembly of God Church for the Morlin family. After being in Forks since 1967, the Morlins were moving to Hillsboro, where pastor Morlin was to minister there (photo).
This week in 1968 it was reported that the Secretary of the Navy had presented 1960 FHS grad Lieutenant Robert F. Henry with the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service while serving as Officer in Charge of Underwater Demolition Team Twelve. Awards had been presented at a recent Cub Scout meeting, some receiving their Bobcat pins were …Scott DePew, Chris King, Don Hunley, and Ron Minor. On the school lunch menu for Thursday… “Tuna Wiggle” on hot biscuit, buttered peas, dessert and milk.
This week in 1953, the State Forestry Service at Tyee was seeking to hire tree planters. The Evergreen Cafe was suggesting in an ad …that donuts would be good to give out for Halloween. A Halloween Skate Party was planned for the Roller Rink. The Hospital Guild was planning an apple canning bee – The end product was to be donated to the Olympic Clinic to serve to patients there. A panel discussion, “Are we spoiling our children?” was to be the upcoming PTA program.
