MOU establishes government-to-government relationship
OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Hoh Indian Tribe and the Washington State Department of Commerce have signed a historic memorandum of understanding (MOU) formalizing their government-to-government relationship. The agreement aims to remove administrative barriers, improve communication, and ensure culturally appropriate data privacy and security. Hoh Tribal Chairwoman Darlene Hollum and Commerce Director Joe Nguyễn signed the MOU in October.
“This agreement strengthens our relationship with Commerce and supports our ongoing work to relocate our village to higher ground for the safety and resilience of our people,” said Chairwoman Hollum.
The Hoh Tribe, a sovereign coastal nation at the mouth of the Hoh River, has lived in the region for generations and is actively investing in sustainable infrastructure and climate-resilient projects.
This is the eleventh MOU Commerce has signed with a tribal government, with more expected in 2026.
“We value the Hoh Tribe’s sovereignty and their contributions to our state’s history and culture,” said Commerce Director Nguyễn.
Commerce continues to streamline funding processes and strengthen partnerships with tribal nations.
