This week in 2001, a “cedar ribbon” had been cut to officially open the SR112 Scenic Byway. The Forks Elks had named Dalaina Olson and Pat Bennett FHS students of the year. Forks Elementary had held a bike rodeo.
Fifty years ago this week Olympic Pharmacy was the business of the week, Vern, Bob, and Betty were featured in a photo (photo). The residents of Evergreen Loop were unhappy with the county over their new road. The Bogachiel Garden Club had taught Mrs. Weissenfels’ 5th graders how to make terrariums. The Barrel Float was happening, $1,000 first prize.
In 1969, the Town Council had approved the annexation of all of Mansfield and Danielson Additions. La Push was being invaded by hippies, and the Tribal Council was taking action. The city’s 750,000-gallon water storage tank was taking shape. (photo).
In 1954, in Town council news, the council had turned down an application for a mobile barber shop in a bus. They did approve new Town Hall hours …10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. The old Rainbow Service station was gone, and a new modern one had opened across from the Triangle lot on Main Street. The grand opening was offering balloons and candy for the kids.
It was reported this week in 1940 that President Roosevelt would not be making a swing through Forks in June. The trip had been cancelled due to the rising concerns of War. Gone With the Wind was coming to the Olympic Theater for three showings in one day. The Forks Forum was accepting dry firewood in exchange for a subscription!
In 1939, a story shared that convicted murderer Ralph Carson had set the back seat of Sheriff Kemp’s car on fire on the trip to Walla Walla.
