Master Gardeners to Present Free Raised Bed Gardening Workshop Aug. 15

Gardeners looking to improve their vegetable harvests are invited to attend the Clallam County Master Gardeners’ next Digging Deeper Saturdays program, “Raised Bed Gardening,” on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim.
The free outdoor workshop will explore the many advantages of growing vegetables in raised beds, including improved drainage, warmer soil, easier access for gardeners and increased productivity through better control of the growing environment.
Master Gardeners will begin the morning with a presentation and question-and-answer session covering raised bed styles, site selection, design considerations, soil preparation, watering techniques, mulches and accessories that support different vegetable crops.
Participants will then tour the raised bed gardens at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, where they can see mature vegetables and newer plantings growing in a variety of raised bed designs. The tour will also showcase different trellising systems and season-extending techniques.
Leading the program will be the Master Gardeners’ Raised Bed team, including Golden Trowel Award recipient David Rambin, Jennifer Blackwood, Dave Eberle, Kelly Pankau, Diane Young and Tom Zingarelli. The team has spent the past several seasons developing the demonstration gardens and will share practical tips gained through their experience.
The workshop is designed to help gardeners of all experience levels improve the productivity of their vegetable gardens while building confidence in planning and maintaining raised beds.
The program is free, open to the public and no registration is required. Because the presentation is held outdoors, participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring a friend or neighbor interested in gardening.
