Hull Scholarships benefit West End Students

22 students selected and $88,915 awarded in 2022

Vancouver, Wash.—A scholarship fund established to honor the lives of Peninsula Telecom owners Maury and Betty Hull awarded 22 students with scholarships totaling more than $88,900 this year. Online applications for 2023 are scheduled to open Dec. 1, 2022, at www.cfsww.org/scholarships.

Deanna Green, Scholarship Manager and Development Associate, said the 22 students supported this year are attending college during the 2022-23 academic year and have strong representation from both school districts, including ten new graduates from the 2022 class.

“These students persisted through adversity, rising to meet the challenges of supporting their families, serving their communities and becoming leaders,” Green said. “The community can feel hopeful for the future with these bright, diverse, community-focused scholars that Maury and Betty Hull saw the value of investing in.”

The Maury and Betty Hull Scholarship was established at the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington in 2018 with $1.8 million from the late couples’ estate. The fund exists to provide support for graduates from the Quillayute Valley and Cape Flattery School Districts who are pursuing post-secondary education, including vocational certificates, graduate and post-graduate programs. To date, the fund has provided 78 awards to 42 students, totaling more than $350,000.

All graduates from the two school districts are encouraged to apply. Scholarship applications are accepted from Dec. 1, 2022, to April 30, 2023, for the following academic year. Awards are eligible for renewal for the duration of a student’s degree or certificate program if they meet course requirements and reapply each year. Awards are determined by a selection committee consisting of Community Foundation staff, community members, and a member of the Hull family.
