Timber salvage after the September, 1951 Forks fire began almost immediately, with Rayonier chemists quickly developing a method to use the charcoal-infused wood for pulp, enabling large-scale recovery that continued until around 1956, transforming burned logs into valuable resources and boosting the local economy.
