Walking Among Old Friends

It was a rainy Memorial Day, which somehow feels like a Northwest tradition. Personally, I didn’t mind a bit, though I’m sure campers and backyard barbecuers might disagree. Rain has a way of giving permission to slow down, especially after spending too many hours trying to get the grass mowed. Sometimes, a rainy day is the only thing that forces a well-earned break.

The Memorial Day ceremony began under gray skies and heavy-ish rain, but as if on cue, the weather cleared. The sunshine made it easier to wander through the cemetery afterward, visiting the graves of old friends and relatives. It was a beautiful scene, flags lining the grounds, moving gently in the breeze, reminders of service, sacrifice, and memories. (And some reminders that the elk herd had recently visited.)

Just a short note from me this week, so I have room for the look-back photos in the column below. Sometimes pictures tell the story better than words.
