A Week Early, But Right on Time?

Well, last week I was a little ahead of myself. I mistakenly reported that the Logger and Trucker Picnic was happening last weekend—but no, friends, it’s actually this coming weekend at the Roundhouse on La Push Road. Consider that your official reminder to head out and enjoy one of our community’s favorite gatherings.

On Monday, I got a call from Soroptimist member Diane Edwards with a concern that the community might be able to help with. She told me about some of our Forks High School Running Start students who are struggling to pay for their education needs this year. As you may know, Running Start allows high school seniors to take college courses and get a jump on their education. It’s a wonderful opportunity—but one that comes with expenses many families didn’t see coming.

Shortly after Diane’s call, I received a note from Donna Blakeslee, who is organizing efforts to help these students. She shared the following:

“Seeking community help! Some FHS students in the Running Start program are struggling to purchase their books this year. Funding has been cut and left many with the hardship of their book purchases. If you know an individual student or just want to help in general, your donation would be really appreciated.”

Monetary donations will be collected through the Soroptimist Clearing House and distributed to students in need. More details on how you can give will be coming soon.

In addition, Diane asked if the Forks Forum might serve as a drop-off point for basic school supplies that the Soroptimists can then distribute. So, if you’d like to help in a practical way, please feel free to drop off school supplies here at the Forum office.

It’s always heartening to see how this community rallies when students—or really anyone—hits a bump in the road. Whether it’s a donation toward a college textbook or a backpack filled with pencils and paper, every little bit adds up. And as I was reminded this week, being early or late doesn’t matter much if you’re moving in the right direction.
