A Look Back … This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2000 local US customs inspector Mike Chapman had announced his candidacy for Clallam County Commissioner District 2. The Clallam Transit bus-tax had passed by 63.37 percent. Lifelong area resident John Cowan had passed. He had been born in Neah Bay in 1914 and lived most of his life on a ranch near Clallam Bay. The “barrel float” was back as a class of 2000 fundraiser. Members of the FHS ASB had planted flower seeds along Forks Avenue (photo). Ted Spoelstra was offering tours of his collection of antiques at $5 per person with proceeds benefiting the Lady Spartan basketball team. Soroptimists had made a donation benefiting the Forks Abuse program (photo).

This week in 1953 the safe at the Antlers Hotel had been robbed with a “good amount” of cash having been taken. The Sol Duc Bridge just north of Forks had been damaged by a “whipping” log truck trailer. As a result of significant damage a 15 ton load limit had been imposed and 15 mph one way traffic. Many logging companies had been shut down. The American Legion was planning a Memorial Day parade to the Forks Cemetery, with a special ceremony laying wreaths on veteran’s graves. The Forks activity was to follow with wreaths also at the Quillayute Cemetery.
