Beach Clean-up April 23

The Clallam Bay Sekiu Lions work throughout the year with the Washington Clean Coast Alliance (aka CoastSavers) organizing beach cleanups and working with the Washington State Marine Debris Plan.

For the April 23 Beach Clean-up, the local Lions work with the Clallam Bay Sekiu Chamber to organize the Western Straits Cleanup. Volunteers check-in at the Clallam Bay Sekiu Visitor Center on Highway 112 and proceed to a beach of their choice, from Bullman Beach to Pillar Point. A favorite over time has been the contest for “Most Unusual Find.”

This year, CoastSavers is part of a multi-partner, multi-year $225,000 grant from the NOAA Marine Debris Program to collect and recycle marine debris, turning it into usable new products.

Target items include hard plastic buoys, netting, rope, foam floats, hard plastic items and more. Focus areas this year will be a volunteer pickup of remote beaches out of Lake Ozette, as well as some of the collected debris from the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

In the northwest Olympic Peninsula, volunteers can report to registration stations at Neah Bay, Lake Ozette, and the Clallam Bay Sekiu Visitor Center.
