Flags at the Cemetery

The volunteers who usually place flags on the graves of veterans at the Forks Cemetery will not be doing so this year. They will be back to do so again for Veterans Day in November.

How We Garden” by Vonnie Voris

Thursday, July 8, 2021

Feeling the aches and pains of gardening? Want to complete garden chores more safely? Vonnie Voris, author and physical therapist, combines her love of gardening and her professional experience to teach body-saving tips for working in the garden. During her hour-long presentation on July 8th beginning at noon, Voris will include discussions on garden design and planning as well as body mechanics, fitness, and self-care.

A graduate of the University of Washington, Voris has been a physical therapist for more than thirty-years. Many of her clients are gardeners who she helped to recover from strains and injuries. Voris published, “How We Garden Body-Saving Advice from a Physical Therapist” in 2019 to help gardeners of all ages reduce the risks of injuries while gardening.

Movement Storytimes in the Park

As part of the Summer Reading Program, the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) invites children and their caregivers to join Movement Storytimes in the Park! This outdoor storytime will be held every Friday during July at 10:30 a.m. in Forks at Tillicum Park. The program will also be held on July 22 at 10:30 a.m. the Sequim Branch Library, and at 2 p.m. at the Port Angeles Main Library. Register at nols.org or your local NOLS branch. Registration for all Movement Storytimes is required.

Movement Storytimes feature songs, rhymes, and stories for movers and shakers. Children age 5 and under will strengthen their bodies and brains with creative movements, and explore their imaginations while balancing, creating rhythm, and becoming active participants. These programs will work on both large and fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and help improve balance and coordination. Best of all, they will encourage playfulness and a lot of silliness!

About the Summer Reading Program

Sign up at www.nols.org/srp or at your local NOLS library to join the Summer Reading Challenge. For every 30 days you read, you can receive an entry into the Grand Prize Drawing (up to two entries). Each Grand Prize Drawing winner will be able to select one of the following prizes: a $100 gift card to a local book store or restaurant, or a LEGO® set (up to $100 in value)! Read for 30 days and earn a color-by-number Summer Reading Challenge T-shirt— express your creativity by filling it in yourself! Whether you read for 20 minutes or 20 hours, it counts as a reading day! Track your reading through August 20.

Summer Reading Program grand prizes, T-shirts, books, and events are generously supported by Friends of the Library groups at all four NOLS branches. For more information about the Summer Reading Program, visit www.nols.org/srp, call 360-417-8500, or email Discover@nols.org.

Fire danger closes Rayonier

lands to the public

Due to the current weather and fire hazard conditions, Rayonier has decided to close all public access to its forestland properties in California, Oregon, and Washington until after the 4th of July Holiday, at which time we will reevaluate conditions.

These properties include lands owned by Rayonier, Pope Resources, Olympic Property Group (OPG), and managed by Olympic Resource Management (ORM). The town of Port Gamble remains open. We continue to monitor weather conditions on a regular basis and may determine to open or close forestland properties on an area-by-area basis.
