Find a cure for cancer
Would you like to find a cure for cancer? The next planning meeting for Relay For Life will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in the Community Health Conference room (located behind the Administration Building at Forks Community Hospital). It’s not too late to join or form a team and make a difference.

Students will be spelling
As part of Elks National Youth Week, Forks Elks Lodge #2524 will sponsor the Annual Spelling Bee at the Forks Elementary School beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. The third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes will be giving it their best shot.
The event sponsors said, “The youth of Forks are very important to the Elks and this is a way to show our appreciation for their hard work and achievements by awarding trophies and ribbons to the winners.”
Family Fair includes Child I.D. program
The 3rd Annual Forks Family Fair will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Forks Elks Lodge.
The event brings together numerous local organizations to provide health and safety information for families and also to provide a good time for all who attend.
This year the fair will include a free “child identification program,” sponsored by Sequim Masonic Lodge #213.
Trained parents will provide parents with a video of the child, an impression of their teeth, a DNA swab and the child’s fingerprints.
The information is turned over to the parents. WACHIP (the Washington Child Identification Program) only retains a signed permission slip.
It’s a vital service that helps in the safe recovery of a lost or missing child.
Phil Castell, a member of the Sequim Lodge, said 10 of the brothers have volunteered to put on the clinic. He said so far the lodge has provided the services for more than 3,000 children on the peninsula.
Also on hand for the fair will be representatives from Concerned Citizens, Forks Abuse, Catholic Community Services, Housing Resource Center, Gentle Touch Physical Therapy and much more.
The entertainment includes a free model rocket demonstration by the Olympic Peninsula Rocketry 4-H Club.
There will lots of children’s games and refreshments. Be there!
Bluegrass and BBQ
The Forks Elks Lodge will host the Fourth Annual Bluegrass & BBQ beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 25.
The event features several bands, including Crescent Blue, Laura & Isaiah and Loose Gravel.
The proceeds go to benefit the Forks Abuse Program. Tickets are $20 with advance purchase required.

Better service, better business
The Forks Chamber of Commerce will hold a customer service workshop Friday, May 17, at JT’s Sweet Stuffs. There will be two sessions available for your convenience. Chamber Executive Director Lissy Andros said, “We encourage all employers to send their staff to this valuable workshop even if they have attended previously. We also invite management, business owners and those seeking employment to join us.”
The session includes classroom exercises and team-building activities.

Sustainable Salmon meeting
The board of directors of the Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Partnership will hold its monthly meeting from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Montesano City Hall in its upstairs meeting room, 112 N. Main St., Montesano.

Check the WCSSP website, www.wcssp.org, for access to the recently released draft Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Plan, for which WCSSP is seeking public comment. Public comment can be made online.
Author, author!
The Clallam Bay Branch of the North Olympic Library System will host local author Karolyn Hamerquist Burdick at a not-to-be-missed program at 7 p.m., Tuesday, |May 21.
Burdick is the author of “The Last Pysht Valley Pioneer.” She will discuss her novel, which tells the tale of Gertrude Stange Fernandes and her early life in the Pysht Valley from 1890-1915. Books will be available for sale with a portion of proceeds going to the Friends of the Clallam Bay Library. Burdick will also be signing copies of her book.

Give it up for the food bank
Saturday, May 11, is the date of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Last year Forks folks provided 643 pounds of non-perishable food for the Forks food bank.
It’s easy to pitch in: just put your donation in or near your mailbox on Saturday, May 11. Your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver the food to the bank. Counter workers at the Forks Post Office will also accept donations.
