Pray for America
The National Day of Prayer is today, May 2. To recognize the day, a prayer service will be held at 12:01 p.m. at the Forks Transit Center.
The event is sponsored by The Caring Place and The Good Book Foundation. All are invited.
The next step toward habitat
Habitat for Humanity Clallam County is building a second Habitat house in Forks. They’re now looking for a suitable family.
The qualifications, which were provided in detail in the April 25 edition of the Forks Forum, include income limits and a willingness to work hard toward building your new home.
If you’re now saying to yourself, “Hey, that might fit my family!” be sure to attend the next Habitat meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. today, May 2, at the Prince of Peach Lutheran Church. Interested families will be walked-through the process and the application form.
The executive director for Habitat Clallam County will be there as will members of the Forks Family Selection Committee. Pam Hunter, pastor of Prince of Peace church, said, “We will be there to help answer any questions you have about Habitat and to help the paperwork go better. If you are at all interested in becoming a Habitat family, please come to Prince of Peace tonight at
7 p.m.”

Sales are growing
The West Enders Seniors will be holding their annual plant sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Sekiu Community Building.
The plants and bouquets are being provided by Angel Crest Gardens. Master gardeners from the Bogachiel Garden Club will present Gardening for Birding and also will answer gardening questions. Students from Clallam Bay School will be providing information about the community garden.
Check out, too, the garden art, paintings and other items by local artists.
Books and magazines on gardening will be for sale. Lunch and snacks also will be available.

Calling all survivors
All cancer survivors and their caregivers are invited to attend the 6th annual Relay for Life Survivors’ Brunch. Join them from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 4, at the Forks Congregational Church. This year’s guest speaker will be survivor Marsha Gillespie. Event organizers say this is a great way to meet survivors, share stories, find out about available services and enjoy a delicious brunch.

And Bingo is its name
On Sunday, May 5, the Soroptimist ladies will host Marathon Bingo at the Forks Elks Lodge on Merchant Road. This event will fund the Soroptimist International of the Olympic Rain Forest’s special women’s cancer project, the SOS Fund. Soroptimist Oncology Support provides funding for transportation expense for those seeking medical treatment.

11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and lunch, drinks and dessert will be served.
In honor of Cinco de Mayo they will be serving bag tacos with all the fixings, so enjoy a great lunch, play some bingo with your family or a friend and support the SOS fund and the Soroptimist ladies!
Marketing strategy
The Forks Open Aire Market is hosting a beginning-of-the-season meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Forks Township Community Center (the kitchen side).
A discussion of the upcoming season is planned. Organizers now say they will open the market from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Saturday, May 18 — the weekend before Memorial Day weekend. The market will be open until the first weekend in October.
All those who are planning to sell, or would like to sell at the market, are invited to attend.
Fish stories
Fishing Day for Kids! will be held from 6 a.m.-noon Sunday, May 5, at the Bogachiel Hatchery Rearing Pond. This popular event, sponsored by the West End Sportsman’s Club, draws lots of young anglers, so follow their advice: Set your alarm clock!
The event is for those 12 and under. Bring your own pole and tackle or the club will have poles to lend.
Bug out!
The Quileute Tribe and Streamkeepers are seeking volunteers to help collect and sort stream bugs. It’s all part of a larger effort to assess the health of streams in the West End. Volunteers will collect samples in the Forks area during the summer and perhaps help sort through bug samples the following months in the Port Angeles office. No previous experience or special equipment is required and training is scheduled to meet the availability of the trainees. Stories from columnist Christi Baron
Life-long Forks resident Christi Baron will relate stories from the West End at the Clallam County Historical Society’s History Tales lecture, 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5.
Baron, an administrative assistant at Forks City Hall, contributes a column to the Peninsula Daily News every other Tuesday highlighting the history of Forks and the West End. Her love for her community and sense of humor shine through in each article.
Baron’s parents are also life-long residents of Forks. She will talk about family life as well as the interesting people she has met — either personally or through her research.
She will speak at the First United Methodist and Congregational Church, 110 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles.

Carolyn O’Neill of Port Angeles was the winner of the Piecemakers Quilt Club raffle quilt held the weekend of Rainfest. The beautiful quilt was made by Vicki Lanham and Karla Lewis. Esther Alward quilted it from a Roxanne Carter pattern called “Garden Bouquet.”
