A Look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2000, lots of photos appeared from the Breakfast with Santa event. FHS FCCLA students helped prepare and serve the meal (photo). The fear of losing District Court II was being discussed. Quileute Tribal Chairman Russell Woodruff and Tribe Youth Advocate Sharon Penn were pictured with one of 500 wrestling-themed toys Sharon and her husband Vince had procured. Most of the toys were donated to the Elks’ Children’s Christmas Party (photo).

In 1975, torrential rains and high water had eaten away most of Highway 101 near the Hoh Store (photo). The FPD was purchasing a radar gun. Former Forks resident Sanford M. Floe had passed. He had served as USFS District Ranger at Snider Ranger Station from 1927 to 1959. The Forks Spartanette’s Drill Team was planning a performance at an upcoming basketball game.

This week in 1968, a first anniversary party was held at the Forks VFW Hall to honor KVAC. Charley Fox, with the VFW, presented radio station owner Gordon Otos with an award for outstanding community service (photo). Two Forks girls, Jody Pruefert and Karen LaChapelle, had survived when the vehicle they were riding in plunged into Lake Crescent. The driver also survived.

This week in 195,3 it was front page news that Miss June Pedersen had wed Jack Olson. It was reported that five local businesses had been burglarized in one night: Forks Cafe, The Smoke Shop, Art’s Place, Dole’s General Store and Forks Grocery. The biggest loss was reported by Art’s Place, with $600 in cash being stolen. Fingerprints were taken, Deputies Loth and Pitts were investigating.

This week in 1939, a National Park survey crew had found a human skeleton near Lake Ozette. The person’s clothing had almost completely decayed, but red rubber boots were on the feet. Sheriff Kemp speculated it was Ozette resident Alfred Nylund who had disappeared 11 years earlier, in April of 1928. Nylund was 30 years old at the time of his disappearance and a search at the time found his boat but not Nylund. It was reported that a WSP patrolman was soon to be stationed on the West End.
