honored Friday

Forks schools are planning a special all-school assembly to honor veterans on Friday, Nov. 8.

Veterans, their families and friends, are encouraged to attend the assembly, which will be at 2 p.m. in the Forks High School gymnasium.

Lions host Veterans

Day dinner at Clallam

Veterans and their spouses are invited to the Clallam Bay/Sekiu Lions’ Annual Veterans Day Dinner at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10.

The dinner will be in the Lions Den on Bogachiel Street. Doors open for conversation and sharing of photos and memorabilia at 5 p.m.

Flecks talks

wrecks in ONRC talk

The Olympic Natural Resources Center monthly Evening Talks at ONRC series continues next at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15.

This month’s program features Rod Fleck, longtime Forks resident and history buff, who will discuss how shipwrecks along the Pacific coast affected world events.

His talk will feature two shipwrecks – the Nikolai (Russian brig St. Nicholas) and the Condor (United Kingdom H.M.S. Condor, 980-ton, barkentine-rigged steam sloop).

The program, at 1455 S. Forks Ave., includes a dessert potluck. Attendees are urged to bring their  favorite dessert to share.

Thanksgiving feast

Forks police is serving up a turkey dinner and town hall Nov. 14. The department is encouraging the public to attend and bring a side dish of their choice.

Mark Nichols with the Clallam County Prosecutors Office will offer a presentation and a panel of professionals that will be available to answer comments, questions or concerns from the public.

Panelists include Mayor Bryon Monohon, Chief Rick Bart, Sheriff Bill Benedict, Rachel House, Ann Simpson, Diane Winters and Tracey Lassus.

West End Historical Society

meets at JT’s Tuesday

The West  End Historical Society will meet at noon next Tuesday, Nov. 12, at JT’s Sweet Stuffs, 80 N. Forks Ave.

Karolyn Burdick from Clallam Bay will be the guest speaker. She will give a presentation on the history of Clallam Bay and her latest published book “The Last Pysht Valley Pioneer.”

Military abuse

doc screens at PC

Veterans Conservation Corps/Vet Corps and Peninsula College Veterans Services will screen “The Invisible War,” a film about sexual assault in the military in Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 8.

The film received the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary.

Fine Arts Center’s

Art Convergence opens

The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center’s “Art Convergence” opens next Thursday, Nov. 14. An artists reception will be open to the public at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15.

The center’s juried exhibition will show artworks from 38 Northwest artists through Jan. 10. Works on display will be for sale.

Live music performances by Lorrie & Ben Paris will run from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 16 and 30 and Dec. 7 and 21.

The gallery, at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.

“Art Convergence” has two jurors: Peninsula College art professor Michael Paul Miller will judge the two-dimensional entries, while Port Townsend sculptor David Eisenhour will judge the three-dimensional works.

ONP Friends offer

up weekend events

The Friends of Olympic National Park have two events set.

The Friends’ annual membership meeting will be at the park’s Visitor Center on Mount Angeles Road at 7 p.m. Nov. 7.

Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum will offer a “state of the park” report.

The Friends also have a volunteer work party planned at the Visitor Information Center Saturday.

Work will include landscaping, pruning, exotic plant removal and general clean up of the park visitor center and Living Forest Trail behind the visitor center. 

The work party runs from 9 a.m.-noon. Participants should bring small tools, gloves and a lunch. The Friends will provide refreshments.  

Members of Friends of Olympic National Park, National Park Volunteers and the general public are invited to attend both events.

Ocean changes topic

of Studium Generale

Robert Steelquist will speak at Peninsula College’s Studium Generale program Nov. 7.

Steelquist is the education and outreach coordinator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.

His presentation, which is entitled “Our Changing Ocean,” will begin at 12:35 p.m. in the college’s Little Theater.

It is free and open to the public.

State looks to fill

open seat on boat board

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission’s Recreational Boating Safety Program invites hunters or anglers who use a boat in their sport to apply for an open position on the program’s Boating Safety Advisory Council.

The Boating Safety Advisory Council is a 15-member committee that provides recommendations to the program on ways to enhance boating safety statewide for all types of recreational boating. The term of service for the position is three years.

The council meets four times a year at the Washington State Parks Headquarters Office in Tumwater.

Members of the council may be reimbursed for travel expenses in accordance with State Parks policy. Council members are selected from applications and appointed by the Commission or a designee.

Any interested parties are invited to request an application by calling Doni Thomas, Boating Program administrative assistant, at 360-902-8832 or by e-mail to doni.thomas@parks.wa.gov.

In addition to the application, candidates are required to submit a letter of interest, a resume and three references. Application materials are due by Nov. 19.
