The John Cowan Heritage Ranch will be open for visitors throughout September.

The ranch, south on the Hoko-Ozette Road west of Sekiu, will be open Sundays from 2-4 p.m., according to Dr. Nancy Messmer, secretary of the Friends of Hoko River State Park.

The Hoko River State Park includes the Cowan Heritage Area and the Little Hoko River Trail, offering a level rain forest walk.

Messmer said Inez Cowan, wife of John, recently visited with her daughter, Peggy Schouvelier, and son, Glen Bellerud.

Inez Cowan expressed appreciation for all of the work that is being done by the Friends of Hoko River State Park.

Special Sunday programs include a Messmer-led tour for the Clallam County Heritage Advisory Committee; Wayne Kirk, an old friend of John Cowan’s and a benefactor of the work being done to maintain the Heritage site, will visit and volunteer.

The public is invited to participate in the Annual Potato Dig and Friends of the Hoko River State Park Board Meeting, from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 22. This event celebrates the first day of fall by harvesting potatoes and welcoming community elders to share memories of life in the Hoko River Valley.

The Friends of Hoko River State Park host the visits, coordinate volunteer work and maintain the Heritage Gardens.
