VFW Veterans Day

Ceremony

Celebrate our Veterans on their day — Veterans Day, 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, at Forks Transit Center. This is also the location of the newly dedicated Gold Star Families Memorial Monument honoring Gold Star Families who have lost a loved one while serving in the military. As veterans we honor those who gave all, as Americans, we are reminded our freedom is not free. Also at the Transit Center is the Blue Star Marker, honoring all who have served or are currently serving in the armed services of the United States.

For generations, the men and women of America’s Armed Forces have demonstrated their willingness to put country before self. These men and women are patriots who served for the greater good, who don’t seek glory, recognition or personal gain.

It was first called Armistice Day and was first observed on November 11, 1919. Why? On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 World War I ended with an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations. Thus this day was celebrated as Armistice Day, however, in 1954 Congress changed the word “Armistice” to “Veterans” to honor all who served in our military.

The public is invited to attend this brief ceremony, prepared by the Fletcher-Wittenborn Post 9106 VFW, to thank those who served in any of the five military services; Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard. For questions, call the VFW at 374-5489.
