William A. (Sonny) Smith

Sept. 4, 1941-April 4, 2022

Sonny was born to William A. and Martha (Wentworth) Smith in Forks, WA. He lived in Forks and on the Quillayute Prairie all of his life.

Sonny graduated from Forks High School in 1959 and went to Olympic College for a short time. He worked for a time at the Vagabond as a cook. Sonny then worked for the B.I.A for 10 years on a cargo ship that took supplies to native villages in Alaska and the ship traveled as far north as Barrow.

During the off-season, from his trips, he worked in logging for many companies. The longest was for Jack James. He also worked for DOC until he retired.

On April 3, 1965, he married Joyce Meng. They celebrated their 57th anniversary the day before he passed.

They have three children Mike(Cheri), Tim (Amy) and Shawna (Mike) Kaschmitter.

He was so proud of his kids and would tell anyone who would listen all about their lives. His grandkids were his pride and joy and, again, the stories of their lives were abundant!

He was a baseball, football, and basketball little league coach while the kids were young. As the years went by he had many of his former players, that are now adults, approach him and had some very nice visits.

He is survived by his wife and kids and grandkids; Abby, Conner and Carter Smith; Anna, Chase, and Cody Kaschmitter. Sister in law Judi Decker and nephews Rick, Mark, and Dean Decker and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Daisy Sinnema, in-laws Blair and Edith Meng, brothers-in-law Wilbur Meng and Gordon Decker.

You are so missed and we hope you are swapping fishing, hunting, logging, and sailing stories with the friends you’ve made throughout your life.
