One Evening at Duncan Field

By Lonnie Archibald

Well, it was the last evening of T-Ball for the season here at Duncan Field as six scrappy teams took to the diamonds to showcase their athletic abilities. Perhaps influenced by the Forks High School baseball and fastpitch teams who both made state, and the Forks Babe Ruth team who won league, these youngsters were ready to give it their all. Well sorta anyway. Coaches besides offering their knowledge of the game must be top-notch babysitters as well. And yes they are.

To be top-notch ball players, players must learn where to take their positions, which hand to place the glove on, and even wearing a glove at all, and of course, watching the batter and runners and not looking to see if grandma is watching. Then of course where to throw the ball if one is lucky enough to catch it to start with.

And for some players who have had a hard day perhaps laying down on the field for a short nap would be fine. Also while hitting a triple the battery after touching first base must learn to touch second and not run directly across the infield to third. And of course, they must show good sportsmanship.

Coaches are to be commended as they give their time to our youth of today and the Spartans of tomorrow. And also to be commended are those friends and relatives who come out to cheer on their favorite teams like that which took place one evening, One evening at Duncan Field.

It appeared the A’s thought they had just won the World Series but then so did the Tigers as well also pictured on this page. Well, I could see where the confusion could have been as I didn’t notice a scoreboard or any statisticians on any of the three fields. Photo by Lonnie Archibald

The Red Sox awaited quietly in the dugout watching for the rain which never came. Yes, that is correct, no rain. Photo by Lonnie Archibald

The Pirates rush onto the field to take their positions. Well, some took their positions only with help from the coaches. At times they might end up with two or three shortstops with no second or third baseman but those in charge soon got that situation straightened out. These future Spartans soon had it figured out, however, and all was well. Well sort of anyway. Oh yes, and the catcher, far left, was carrying too heavy of a load to be running with the team so he took time out to adjust his chest protector. Photo by Lonnie Archibald

The Tigers celebrated as they also thought they had just won the World Series, but you know what? I think all six teams were winners on this last evening of T-Ball here in Forks. Here on Duncan Fields. Photo by Lonnie Archibald
