The Forks Branch Library announced the winners of its summer Chess Tournament, held Saturday, July 5. The event, part of NOLS’s “Level Up at Your Library” Summer Reading Program, drew 14 chess players from across the community for an afternoon of fast-paced, friendly competition.
The unrated rapid tournament used a 10+5 time control and prizes were given to the top scorers. First place was awarded to Don Panico, who currently serves as the Supervisor of the Town of Brookhaven, New York, and happened to be visiting Forks during the chess tournament. Second place went to Sophie, a young teenager who demonstrated impressive strategy. Steve Dalman, a local known for his chess skills, took third place.
“This tournament brought people together in a fun, supportive environment where everyone could improve their chess skills and learn from one another,” said Angeles Brito, the library staff member who organized the free event. “Libraries aren’t just places to read. They’re where community happens.”
Scott Jackson of the Quileute Tribal School Chess Club volunteered his time and expertise to help facilitate the event.
The Forks Branch Library will continue the summer game series with an UNO Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 3 to 4 p.m. For more details and information about other free events, visit NOLS.org/events, email discover@nols.org or call 360-374-6402.
The Summer Reading Program is generously supported by local Friends of the Library groups.
