PORT ANGELES, WA. – Peninsula College is proud to announce the launch of its new Bachelor of Applied Science in Teacher Education (BAS-TE) program, designed to address the growing need for K-8 educators on the North Olympic Peninsula and beyond.
Set to begin in Fall 2025, the BAS-TE program is a flexible, high-quality pathway that prepares students for Washington state K-8 teacher certification. Developed with a strong emphasis on equity, inclusivity, and community engagement, the program is rooted in a comprehensive conceptual framework that reflects the college’s mission to advance student success and serve the region.
“Our local communities are in urgent need of well-prepared, compassionate educators,” said Suzy Ames, President of Peninsula College. “The BAS-TE program was created to answer that call. It’s more than a degree. It’s a way for local students to stay, serve, and lead in their home communities.”
Key features of the BAS-TE program include:
• Residency-based model: Candidates gain real classroom experience starting in their first year, gradually increasing responsibilities under mentorship.
• Hybrid courses: Offered on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings, the program supports students balancing work and family life.
• Evening and online flexibility: Coursework blends in-person and virtual instruction to increase accessibility.
• No current waitlist and a low faculty-to-student ratio, offering a supportive and personal learning environment.
The program weaves trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices throughout its curriculum, preparing educators who are equipped to support students’ academic and social-emotional development. Graduates will be able to create rigorous, inclusive learning environments and collaborate with communities to ensure public schools thrive.
Applications are accepted year-round, with new cohorts beginning in the fall. Financial aid is available to qualifying students. For information about the new program, visit pencol.edu.
The college is proud to offer innovative degrees like the BAS-TE that respond directly to local workforce and community needs.
