This week in 2000 tributes and memorials were taking place for slain Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Wally Davis. He had been with CCSO for 5 years when he lost his life. Members of the Forks ICN Committee had visited Mary Gates Hall (photo).
Fifty years ago this week the countdown was on for school to start on Sept. 2, the Variety Store was having a back to school sale …Converse Tennis Shoes were on special for $6.44; Pee Chee Folders were on special for 7¢ each …limit six. In classified ads a Shake/Shingle Mill on 5.5 acres was for sale for $140,000.
In 1968, the Bogachiel rearing pond had received 68,000 steelhead. It was the first installment of the 350,000 that were to be raised at the hatchery. The steelhead were to be released in local rivers the following year (photo). The city was planning a water tank project. A Forks 4-H Fair had been held at the school’s multi-purpose room. The Archer siblings had done well: Greg and Ron both with six blue ribbons, and Kathy with two blue ribbons. In hunting season news Band-tailed pigeon season was to be open September 1-30.
This week in 1953 a rare front page photo was shared of the Rayonier shop at Sekiu. A story also accompanied telling about the new hack saw that was pictured and other new machinery at the facility. In really sad news, a young Seattle couple had committed suicide in Lake Crescent. They had left a note, for their landlady, telling of their plan, back in their Seattle apartment. Fourth of July queen June Pedersen had attended Seafair and the Aqua Follies, she was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Burr as her chaperones. Underwater cable had been installed in Lake Crescent bringing power to residents at the Lake. Dr. Meyers had undergone surgery in Seattle. With the new Forks water system being planned the Town Council had approved a 46 percent increase in water rates.
