Candy Chaos at Quileute Days

If you’ve ever been to the Quileute Days Parade, you know it’s more than a parade; it’s a candy-throwing extravaganza.

Lissy Andros and I came prepared in the Forks Fourth of July Suburban. Last time we went, we made the mistake of bringing only a five-pound bag of candy. This year Lissy did the shopping and doubled it to 10 pounds, added 30 full-size candy bars (yes, full-size!), and threw in a couple more pounds of fancy Hershey chocolates for good measure.

Right away we heard the crowd’s approval.

“Wow…full-size bars!”

You have to pace yourself because the parade route isn’t long. We were almost out by the end, which meant we judged it about right.

Meanwhile, I was driving, trying not to rear-end the entry in front of us, watching for kids darting after candy, and attempting backhand throws. It’s safe to say I won’t be trying out for any professional candy-throwing league.

My apologies to anyone I accidentally hit with flying chocolate, especially the poor woman who was looking down just as I lobbed a full-size bag of Peanut M&M’s her way. She looked up just in time to see the bright yellow package headed straight for her and nearly fell over!

A big thank you to the La Push community for welcoming us once again. Between visiting with friends in the lineup, the sandwiches handed out by the fire department, and the excitement along the parade route, the Quileute Days parade is always one of the highlights of the summer.
