This week in 2000 it was sad news that the West Wind Gallery cat, Mona Lisa, had gone missing from the Gallery on Sol Duc Way. The new FHS addition was just about ready for the dedication ceremony planned Aug. 26. QVSD had hired Andrew Peterson as the Spartan line coach. In classified ads, a two bedroom home in Sherwood Forest was offered for $600 per month.

Fifty years ago this week there was a new doctor in town, Dr. Steve Kriebel had addressed the Forks Chamber of Commerce. He said he chose Forks because, “My wife likes rain.”(photo) (Editor’s note- a few weeks ago in the Look Back, a bike trip by David West to Canada was mentioned) a follow up…it was reported that David West had almost made it back home without a scratch when coming through the Bear Creek area encountered an accident with a car, he only suffered bumps and bruises. There was a recall on the three county Commissioners. In Town council news …There was trouble brewing at the FPD between the county sheriff and Forks regarding the cost per day per inmate. Forks was getting $5 wanted to raise to $10 and settled on $7. Joe Burke petitioned to annex his property on Division Street into the city limits. The city requested Bi-Centennial status so they could get money for banners for the 4th of July. Volunteers had restored the “Forks Burn” sign at the park (photo). A monthly free Senior Lunch had been started, with community help, at the Congregational Church.

This week in 1968 Harry and Betty Sackett were building a trailer park near the airport to be called Rainforest Trailer Court (photo). Peninsula College was offering a 12 week nurse’s aid course, the cost was $50. Roy Mohondro had been hired to coach football, basketball, and track for the Spartans (photo). In advertising Alice’s Apparel was selling “Love Beads.”

In 1953 school news, 32 teachers were to be employed at Forks schools for the next year. Jean Carey and Fred Klahn had been married. The town council had approved Ord. 49 to issue bonds for the town water system. Thirteen year old Louie Cook was attending Jr. Sportsman’s Camp at Orcas Island, he was sponsored by the West End Sportsman’s Club. Olympic Peninsula boy scouts had returned from the big Jamboree in California.
