This week in 2001, the 8th annual Day of Caring was being planned with work at Sunshine and Rainbows and the Forks Cemetery. FHS ASB washed downtown windows. PUD was warning of rate increases that might be as much as 55-141%. The Lost Resort was having a season-opener party with music, food, and fun. FHS held a talent show (photo). The middle school band performed at the Rhody parade.
Fifty years ago, the fire department had been busy with five recent structure fires. Lillian Pullen had visited Forks first graders. She had shared Quileute songs and stories (photo). The FHS carpentry class held an open house at their completed home on Bunker Road. FHS class of ‘76 photos were in the paper. The Memorial Day Hangar Dance was happening.
In 1969, it was sad news this week that 1966 FHS grad, Don R. Kraft, had been killed in action in Vietnam (photo). An 18-year-old Forks high school student working afternoons at M.R. Smith Shingle Mill had a terrible accident …falling into a saw and severing most of his hand. The Calawah Bridge was getting two inches of new asphalt.
In 1954, the Memorial Day parade was being planned by the VFW and American Legion. Participants would march from downtown to the Forks Cemetery. A second service would take place at the Quillayute Grange and Cemetery. It was reported that Mr. and Mrs. James Whitehead had welcomed a son. Victor had weighed in at 6 pounds.
This week in 1940, it was reported that the Congregational Church had been filled to capacity for the Baccalaureate Service.
