Compassionate Listener

Danikka King

Danikka possesses a rare, quiet strength that serves as a tether for those around her. In a high school environment often defined by clamor and emotional volatility, she maintains a steady internal integrity that remains unswayed by the noise of her peers. Danikka does not merely hear; she listens to understand, absorbing the tribulations and lamentations of her classmates without judgment or condemnation. By choosing to sit within the tension of others’ emotions rather than attempting to fix or dismiss them, she has become an island of stability in an otherwise murky sea of turmoil. Her presence is a constant reflection of kindness and respect. She serves as a salient, though often silent, guardian of others’ well-being.

Elizabeth Lundberg

Elizabeth is a willing, eager, and compassionate listener. She has a heart that cares deeply for the well being of others. She is always willing to jump in and help peers, and is always the first to lend an ear to them when they are struggling. She supports her peers with empathy and sincerity—both difficult traits for humans to master well.

Resilience

Margarito Gonzalez-Black

I have nominated Margarito Gonzalez-Black as a Student of Character for the Resilience category because he possesses a stubborn resolution and a hard-won tenacity that I have come to admire over the past four years. Margarito is a young man who has consistently had to dig deep within himself to find the will to persist despite a plethora of external challenges. His resilience is neither flashy or effortless; it is a sturdy determination borne of his ability to pick himself up every single time he is knocked down. This young man has faced adversity with grit, quiet resolve, and an enduring spark of hope that is now carrying him toward graduation and a promising future in carpentry. I thought that I could not be more proud of Margarito for the resilience he has shown during his tenure here at FHS, but then I overheard him sharing this hard-earned wisdom with a peer recently. Margarito spoke of the inherent value of educational labor and encouraged this underclassman to push himself, try harder, and do better. He deserves this accolade for the growth and steadfastness he has demonstrated, and I am honored to recognize him for his extraordinary strength of character.

Brooklyn Windle

Brooklyn is determined, strong-willed, and resilient in so many ways. She has faced challenges head-on, continued pushing forward, and learned to focus on what truly matters—her own growth, happiness, and future. Brooklyn, it has been amazing watching you grow this year. You continue to show strength even during difficult moments, and that says so much about your character. Keep believing in yourself, showing up for yourself, and chasing the things that matter to you. You are capable of so much more than you realize.

Mrs. Vander Veur

Isabella Hayworth

While I don’t have Isabella in class this year, I do have her on the Speech and Debate team. Isabella is the most resilient competitor on the speech and debate team this year. Every fallback throughout the season she has taken as a challenge. When things didn’t go her way, she would make moves to improve and do better next time. Challenging herself with one event wasn’t enough for her either; even though the event was tough, she decided to take on a debating event as well mid-season. I am beyond impressed with Isabella’s ability to continuously try and continuously improve through adversity. I am very excited to have her back on the team next year and to see all she accomplishes.

Martin Angel Chavira-Paz

Martin is kind, funny, outgoing, and incredibly hardworking. Watching him step out of his comfort zone and run for ASB office was honestly awesome to see. Martin, you have a determination in you that stands out, and it shows in everything you do. You work hard for your goals, stay positive through challenges, and continue pushing forward even when things are not easy. You are resilient, dependable, and always willing to help others along the way. Thank you for being yourself—I’m excited to see all the things your future holds.

Mrs. Vander Veur

Brenna Riggan

Brenna, words honestly cannot describe how resilient you are. No matter what challenges or setbacks have come your way, you continue to grow, improve, and come back stronger every time. You keep leveling up in so many areas of your life, and that takes real strength. Resilience is one of the most important qualities a person can have, and you show it every single day without even realizing it sometimes. I am incredibly proud of you and all the progress you’ve made, and I cannot wait to see where life takes you next. Keep shining and keep believing in yourself.

Mrs. Vander Veur

Chloe Gaydeski

Chloe is strong, hardworking, determined, resilient, and definitely little miss independent. I just want you to know how proud I am of you and how grateful I’ve been to watch you grow into the person you are becoming. Working together during Prom and Graduation setup last year showed me just how dependable, tough, and capable you are. Life will always have setbacks, but what matters most is how you respond to them—and you always find a way to keep moving forward. Remember to focus on what you can control, accept what you cannot, and continue building a life that makes you happy. That is what truly matters in the end. I’m proud of you, Chloe, and excited to see what comes next for you.

Mrs. Vander Veur

Bailey Johnson

Bailey is hardworking, driven, resilient, and someone who holds herself to incredibly high standards. Whether it’s sports, school, LINK, or helping others, she always gives 100% even when she already has so much on her plate. Bailey, I’ve noticed how often you continue showing up for others and helping wherever needed, even during times when you’re stretched thin yourself—and that says a lot about your character. You continue finding ways to push through challenges, stay focused, and work toward your goals no matter what obstacles come your way. Your determination, leadership, and resilience stand out more than you probably realize. I’m proud of you for continuing to push yourself while also supporting those around you. Keep trusting yourself and all the strength you have inside you. Remember, it’s okay to say no and it’s okay to take a break when you need one. Take care of you!

Mrs. Vander Veur

Aiden Cabe

Aiden is kind, funny, smart, and extremely resilient. No matter what challenges try to get in his way, he always seems to find a way to make things work and keep moving forward. Aiden, I’ve seen so much growth in you over the past two years, and it has been awesome watching you continue to mature and figure out who you are. You have a good heart, a strong sense of humor, and a resilience that will take you far in life. I’m proud of the progress you’ve made and excited to see where next year—and your future overall—takes you. Keep being yourself and keep pushing forward.

Mrs. Vander Veur

Jasmine Blair

Jasmine is a student I consider resilient. Even when faced with barriers she pushes through to do what needs to be done. Her progress from the beginning of the year to now is outstanding. No matter what is thrown her way she shows up with a smile on her face and still has compassion for others.

Ms. Meisel

Jlynn Vessey

Jlynn is not only an amazing FHS student, but also my daughter, which makes this nomination even more special to me. I am proud of her beyond words and so grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to watch her grow into the person she is becoming—and even more grateful that I get to continue watching her grow throughout her life.

Jlynn has shown resilience in so many ways, both in school and outside of school. One moment I’ll never forget was watching her compete in Speech and Debate and hearing the poem she wrote and presented herself. I cried like the proud mom I am because it was such a powerful reminder of her strength, talent, and courage.

Jlynn, you have such a big, beautiful life ahead of you. Your ability to stay strong, keep pushing forward, and overcome challenges will carry you far in life. No matter where life takes you, never forget how capable, talented, and resilient you truly are. I am endlessly proud of you, my little ROCKSTAR. I love you so much! XOXOXO

Mom (Ms. Vander Veur)

Tessa Holt

Tessa is a student I consider resilient. Even when faced with difficult situations she pushes through to get them done. Even when things are hard she still shows up with kindness and compassion for others. She continues to show growth as she navigates her first year of high school, both in school and out.
