A Look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2000 the Spartans had won their 14th straight game (photo). It was reported city officials had gone before the Senate Natural Resources Committee to question commissioner Belcher’s management. An OCC inmate had walked away from a job working on the Wast Water Treatment plant at the facility. A committee was seeking ‘scenic byway’ status for Hwy 112. A full page of senior projects was featured; Jason Richard was one of the students presenting (photo). Ron Gaydeski and the Spartan wrestlers were Evergreen League Champs (photo).

This week in 1975 it was reported that the Congregational Church was planning a Valentine’s Luncheon, the cost per person was $1.75. The hospital had posted a notice that anyone receiving an injection as an outpatient and not covered by insurance had to pay cash. Plantation chicken was on the school lunch menu. The West End Pioneer Club was meeting at the Alder Grove Hall, the Munsons were going to provide musical entertainment.

This week in 1953 it was sad news for the community that pioneer Louis Klahn had died. Klahn was born in Germany in 1871 and came with his parents and many siblings to the US in 1886, settling on the east coast. The family came west in 1901 and homesteaded in the Quillayute, Sol Duc and Forks areas. He was a noted woodsman and logger (photo). It was also sad news that local businessman Ralph Stevens had also passed away. Stevens was just 56 years old and had worked as a mechanic and was, for a time, in partnership with Art Anderson. Stevens also created one of the first mobile home parks on Bogachiel Way called Stevens Grove. He also helped organize and was the first president of the Forks Lions Club. A March of Dimes Dance was happening at the Legion Hall, $2 per couple, with music by Nora Lee, Will and Jackie.
