This week in 2000 the Quillayute Valley Scholarship Auction had set a new record of $63,012. In police calls a woman had reported that kids were fishing in her backyard fish pond. They were gone on arrival of FPD but left behind their tackle. As a St. Patrick’s Day surprise 3rd grade teacher Carrie Echeita played her bag pipes at FES (photo). The Forks Elks were celebrating their twenty-five years in the community. Olympic Corrections Center had presented staff awards. Quileute Tribal Chairman, Russell Woodruff, had presented Marie Reibe with a necklace in recognition of her being named Support Person of the Year (photo).

This week 50 years ago, facing the possibility of another levy failure the QVSD school board had approved massive cuts for the next school year. FHS was to lose nine teachers, FES 11 teachers and a principal and two janitors and a librarian positions were also to be cut. Also there would be no public use of the school facilities after hours to save on electricity etc. In advertising the special at Butt’s Cafe was jumbo prawns and fresh salmon; and Hamilton’s Horn In Tavern in Clearwater was featuring live music on Friday and Saturday nights. There had been eight teams participating in little league basketball. The 1975 tournament winning team was the Lakers (photo).

This week in 1953 the Beckers were granted a 20 year contract that had been executed for the development and operation of Kalaloch Ocean Resort in ONP. The Beckers had been operating on a year to year lease until the coastal strip was added in January 1953. Plans included a new Inn, restaurant, and 20 modern cabins. Two juveniles had been arrested for entering a home and stealing $20. They had $5.96 left when apprehended. The Orville McCanns had welcomed a baby boy, Mark Owen, on St. Patrick’s Day.
