Concert planned for

Congregational Church

Jim Dixon, a well-accomplished pianist and minister with the Prisoners of Christ, plays songs of devotion at the Congregational Church of Forks on  at the 11 a.m. service Aug. 25. Dixon’s playlist includes upbeat versions of several of traditional hymns in addition to his own compositions. The Rev. Warren Johnson said all are welcome to attend Dixon’s concert.

Aid with school supplies

The Port Angeles School District, along with Parent Line/Lutheran Family Services and other local service organizations will provide school supplies, haircuts and immunizations for families in need at the 2013 Back to School Event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m Saturday, Aug. 24, at Jefferson Elementary School, 218 E. 12th St.

Supplies and services will be offered free to students in grades K-12. Clallam County Health and Human Services will offer required immunizations for $12 per immunization. Medicaid can be billed for services.

Smilemobile staff will make appointments for the mobile dental unit’s visit from Sept. 9-21 and Sodexo Food Services will provide a lunch of a hot dog barbecue with all the fixings.

Attendees do not need to sign up in advance.

The Port Angeles School District’s Central Services office at 216 E. Fourth St. is now accepting donations of supplies.

Overeaters Anonymous

host special speakers

Speakers from Bremerton and other parts of western Washington will speak at a special meeting of the Forks chapter of Overeaters Anonymous from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. The speakers will convene a special panel at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 250 N. Blackberry St.

Teen Center concert Monday

Award-winning rock vocalist Kristen Faulconer of Los Angeles will play along with Sacramento-based punk band Twitch Angry in a special concert at the Forks Teen Center on Monday, Aug. 26. The concert is open to those ages 12-17 and begins at 3 p.m. Admission is $5. The concert is sponsored by the Anti-Nonsense Network.

State lifts campfire bans

Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Washington State Parks have lifted bans on campfires in western Washington after recent rain and upcoming milder weather.

As of last Thursday, Aug. 15, campers in state park campgrounds west of the Cascade crest were allowed to have campfires in provided campfire rings and also use charcoal briquettes to barbecue.

Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark also lifted the ban on recreational fires in approved fire pits on forest lands under DNR fire protection.

United Way makes

Grants available

United Way of Clallam County announced this week it will make Great Beginnings grants available to help fund early learning programs.

United Way has $100,000 available to fund programs in 2014.

To be eligible, agencies must attend one of two mandatory bidders conferences at Linkletter Hall in Olympic Medical Center’s lower level in Port Angeles. The first will be from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5. The second will be from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6.

Great Beginnings grant applications will be due no later than close of business Monday, Sept. 30.

ONP open house Thursday

Olympic National Park is inviting the community to an open house to celebrate the park’s 75-year history next Thursday, Aug. 29.

“We’ve been very honored by the outpouring of congratulations and well-wishes during the park’s 75th anniversary year,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. “We hope our neighbors and fellow community members will stop by the open house so that we can honor and thank them for their years of support for Olympic National Park.”

The event will be in the park’s Port Angeles Visitor Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Olympic National Park was established 75 years ago, on June 29, 1938, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the bill that founded the park.

Olympic National Park includes 922,651 acres of mountains and more than 70 miles of Pacific Ocean coast.
