Ginger’s Closet & Disaster Relief Launches Scholarship for West End University Students

Ginger’s Closet & Disaster Relief, a beloved local non-profit, is excited to announce the launch of a new scholarship aimed at supporting West End students pursuing higher education. This scholarship will provide financial aid to students in their second year or beyond, helping them continue their college studies.

Ginger’s Closet, known for its dedication to community service and sustainability, has made a significant impact on the Forks community. In the past year, the organization has transformed shop sales and grants into over $50,000 in direct financial aid, helping families facing medical emergencies, house fires, and other crises. Additionally, Ginger’s Closet distributed free clothing and bedding worth $36,600 at shop prices to low-income residents, equivalent to over $366,000 at retail cost.

The scholarship program is part of Ginger’s Closet’s ongoing commitment to education and community support. “We believe in the power of education to change lives and build a stronger community,” said Layla Rawls, Executive Director of Ginger’s Closet. “This scholarship is another step in our mission to support our neighbors in Forks.”

Door sales for the upcoming fashion show fundraiser to be held on June 29th, along with other donations and sales, will go directly towards this new initiative. Doors open at 6:30 pm at the Roundhouse (Akalat Center) in Forks, WA. The entry fee of $10 supports the scholarship and gives access to a fun evening with a fashion show with local models featuring entirely thrifted outfits, a silent auction, plus music by the Richwine Road Band. Food and drinks will be available for purchase, supported by the Lion’s Club and Ginger’s Closet.

Ginger’s has a history of supporting students. A back-to-school voucher program provides clothes to all children and university students on the West End, significantly boosting students’ confidence and safety as they return to school. Last year, kids received over $5,000 ($50,000 retail equivalent) in clothing. “People from the schools and community helped more than we’ve ever seen before, with people spreading the word and school counselors even shopping for students who lacked transport,” said Sena Engeseth, Board President. “We hope for an even bigger turnout this August.”

Those who wish to make direct financial gifts to the scholarship may do so at the event, at Ginger’s Closet or at First Federal bank in Forks. Donated items will be welcomed for the silent auction through Saturday June 29th and may be brought to Ginger’s Closet at 170 Sol Duc Way.

The scholarship launch underscores Ginger’s Closet’s holistic approach to community support, combining immediate aid with long-term investments in education and sustainability. The organization invites everyone to join in their mission by donating, volunteering, or shopping at their non-profit store.
